The International River Guide Training is a 15-day course that puts you on some of the most dynamic river systems in the world, teaching you white water rafting skills and expedition-based leadership.

Past IRGT participants now work all over the world in at least 13 countries as river guides, and IRGT is run in a number of countries including across Asia, US and in Europe.

Flexible Course Pathways

We offer two IRGT course programs: IRGT ‘day guide’ with the focus on guiding day trips or IRGT ‘expedition guide’ with the additional content and knowledge to guide multi day expeditions.

The expedition river guide course is our most comprehensive course and as such includes remote multiday river expeditions as part of this river-based training course.

Comprehensive Curriculum

The curriculum focuses on water safety, technical rafting, team leadership, and multi-day expedition planning and includes content as listed below:

  • Personal White Water Rafting Skills & Training
  • Raft Construction, Equipment Maintenance & Repair
  • Safety Briefs, Pre-Planning, Risk Assessments and Emergency Procedures
  • Communication and Signals
  • Himalayan Hydrology and Navigation
  • Principles of River Rescue and River Safety
  • Scouting and Portaging Rivers
  • Raft Flips, Pins and Rescue Techniques
  • Remote First Aid, Casualty Management
  • Incident Management
  • Expedition Planning and Considerations
  • Wilderness Camping and Cooking
  • Leadership and Team Management

Certification & Assessment

On completion of this course participants are individually assessed and graded for guide competency on the river, according to the International Scale of River Difficulty (Class I- VI) to ensure they can safely pursue the next appropriate employment or learning opportunity on course completion. Participants will be certified by IRGT Training Directors on this basis at a presentation at the end of the course.

In addition to this all participants complete their Rescue 3 International ‘Whitewater Rescue Technician -Professional’ certification as part of the IRGT certification process.

Day 1
Arrive in Kathmandu Nepal/Paro Bhutan. Meet the trainers, course introductions and any last minute prepping of PPE & kit before we travel to the river base the next day.
Days 2 & 3
Day 2 and 3 are an intro to the role of the guide with time on the water getting to grips with basic guide skills along with Hydrology and safety lectures.
Days 4 & 5
Day 4 and 5 include White Water Rescue Technician syllabus for professional guides with a fulll range of technical rescue skills covered.
Day 6
More hands on guiding skills including flip drills, briefings.
Days 8, 9, 10 & 11
Multi day river expedition.
Day 12
Last full river training day.
Day 13
Final river day assessments.
Day 14
Final river day assessments and travel back to the capitol.
Day 15
Certification day, debriefs and celebration dinner.

Everything you need to know about our International River Guide Training course.

What qualifications will I receive?

You'll earn an internationally recognised raft guide or trekking guide qualification upon successful completion. The expedition guide course provides the most comprehensive certification, equipping you to lead multi-day expeditions.

Do I need previous guiding experience?

No previous guiding experience is required, though a passion for the outdoors and reasonable fitness level are essential. Our immersive training approach is designed to develop your skills from the ground up in a supportive environment.

Where are the courses delivered?

Courses are primarily delivered in Nepal, offering authentic expedition environments and world-class river conditions. We occasionally run courses in other locations across Asia, the US, and Europe.

What's included in the course fee?

The course fee includes all instruction, equipment, accommodation during the expedition, meals in the field, and your qualification upon completion. International travel to Nepal and personal expenses are not included.
