International Trek Leader Training

The ‘International Trek Leader Training’ course is designed for those that wish to learn the fundamental skills involved in leading treks on established routes as a professional career training program or who want to develop their knowledge and skills and confidence trekking around the world.

This educational programme is based in some of the most dramatic mountain regions in the world enabling you to gain the knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a commercial trek leader. Using huts and camps and working with guides and porters you will be learning all about risk management, navigation, route planning and leadership.

About the Programme

With over 30 years' experience of operating and guiding Himalayan treks throughout Nepal and in remote regions all over the world, we have designed this 15 day educational program to maximise learning outcomes through the completion of a major multi day trek to gain first-hand experience, knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a commercial trek leader.

Past ITLT participants now work all over the world in at least 13 countries, and ITLT is run in a number of countries including across Asia, US and in Europe.

What You Will Learn

Using both lodges and overnight camping experiences, participants will work alongside the team of porters and guides under the supervision of the course tutors, learning the fundamental skills under the following headings:

  • Route choice, planning & navigation techniques
  • Risk Analysis, incident management and emergency procedures
  • Safe movement on mixed terrain
  • Customer care and welfare
  • Campcraft
  • Weather conditions and temperature
  • Group management
  • First aid & altitude considerations
  • Equipment use and packing
  • Environmental considerations and sustainable tourism
  • Leadership skills

Your Certification

Course participants gain ITLT certification and evidence of the completed training presented by ITLT Training Directors at the end of the course. As part of this ITLT certification participants will also gain the Rescue 3 International 'Outdoor Risk Management' and Rescue 3 International 'Water Safety for Expedition Leaders' certification.

Arrive in Kathmandu Nepal/Paro Bhutan. Meet the trainers, course introductions and any last minute prepping of PPE & kit before we travel to the training base the next day.
Day 2
Travel to training base and safety considerations Travel to training base.
Days 3 & 4
Navigation training.
Day 5
Expedition skills day (campcraft and cooking).
Day 6
Expedition preparation and packing day.
Day 7
Travel to start of the trek/expedition.
Day 8 - Day 12
Trek/expedition training.
Day 13
Return to training base camp to sort kit.
Day 14
Debrief day and final assessments.
Day 15
Travel back to capitol for rest day, end of course dinner.

How long is the programme and where does it take place?

The ITLT is a 15-day programme delivered in Nepal, giving participants the opportunity to complete a major multi-day trek in one of the world's most iconic trekking destinations. This hands-on approach ensures you gain real experience in the environments you will one day be leading others through.

What qualifications will I gain on completion?

On completing the programme you will receive your ITLT certification, presented by ITLT Training Directors. You will also gain two additional Rescue 3 International certifications: Outdoor Risk Management and Water Safety for Expedition Leaders, giving you a strong and credible qualification package to take into your career.

Do I need any prior experience to join the programme?

While no formal professional qualifications are required, participants should have a solid foundation of personal trekking experience and a good level of fitness. If you are unsure whether the programme is right for you, get in touch and we will be happy to talk it through.
