Vanhangs Adventure Tourism Development, China

Challenge:

We were requested to assist one of China's largest real estate companies to develop some of its locations for adventure tourism - some of the first of its kind in China and in a number of locations, both inland and coastal for both local tourism and educational use.  A long trem project engaged as main the consultants to assist from the intial conception stage through to the supply and provision of activities of each location by local staff and a completion hand over with each site being in full operation.  ‍

Our Approach:  

‍The aim was to look at a number of exisiting locations they wished to develop, identify what activities could be developed at each site using the natural environment and potentially design and build facilities where required. To then source equipment required for each site, write company risk assessments and operational policies, instructor manuals for staff training, design a range of activity programs, including Vanhangs' own award schemes for some activities (climbing, paddlesports etc). The next stage was staff training at each location for them to be able to safely deliver all activity programs before the final stage of trainig more senior staff in onging audit processes at each location.

‍Delivery was a staged process:

• Stage 1 - China - Meet Vanhangs development team in China, visit all locations to assess potential locations and activity options including (high/low ropes, zip lines, climbing/abseiling, coasteering, kayaking , SUP, trail walks, camping activities etc). Then with local companies design and implement loction development and source equipment.
• Stage 2 - UK  - Design activity programs and awards schemes based on Vanghangs client needs for each location as well as produce risk assessments and operational procedures. We then designed a comprehensive instructor training program with manuals and had all paperwork/manuals translated into Chinese for local team use.
• Stage 3 - China - A team team from Adventure Consultancy then spent time at each location training local teams of staff to deliver and run the actvities assited with local interpreters.
• Stage 4 - China - Trial activities and run pilot courses in China run by local teams of staff overseen by our team. Review all operations and set recommended audit processes with Vanghang managment team.

‍Outcome:

‍A process of 2 years from concept to completion to get all locations operational, processes in place and all staff trained.

‍Key Results:

‍We delivered bespoke consultation services based on each of Vanghangs locations, to suit there business needs, client range and their long term aims. A balance of combining international good practice with practices already in place in China, and support the set up self sustainable operations that could continue to develop in the future.
